Today, wanna to bring to you a thesis related to OPRATION AND CONTROL OF AZEOTROPIC DISTILLATION COLUMN...this document may be a bit acedemic but it may bring certain level of benifits to many of us (Chemical & Process Engineers)...Enjoy...
This document bring us something relates to
- a concept for the design of heterogeneous distillation columns under aspects of operability.
- a self-optimizing control concept is provided for a sequence of three homogeneous azeotropic distillation columns with two recycles (boundary separation scheme)
- a short cut method is developed to compare the performance of homogeneous and heterogeneous sequences based on the sum of the reboiler duties for identical equipment
Operation and Control of Azeotropic Distillation Column Sequences

A doctoral thesis from the Automatic Control Laboratory (IfA), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Z¨urich.

World Digestive Health Day
This day is to increase awareness of all to improve the care of viral hepatitis patients and world health.
As told by working group of
World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO), a total of 400 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B, and about half that number are chronically infected with hepatitis C. Together, these diseases are responsible for the majority of hepatocellular carcinoma cases, the THIRD leading cause of cancer death worldwide.

Someone raised a question :

Non-Return Valve (NRV) is provided on centrifugal pump discharge to avoid pump damage due to backflow. In some special case, designer provide a manual block valve across the NRV. Why ? Isn't it defeat the purpose of NRV ?

Infact there are several reasons behind this application...

Art Montemayor :
" 1. Prime the pump with the discharge fluid that is on the downstream side of the check valve

2. Drain the discharge fluid that is on the downstream side of the check valve."

JoeWong :
"If the pump is started-up automatically whenever the duty pump failed, then the standby pump discharge isolation valve shall always open. The bypass gate shall always open to allow small amount of hot fluid from discharge manifold back to suction manifold. Allowing hot fluid passing the standby pump will always keep the pump hot. Whenever the standby pump kick in, it is ready to receive hot fluid avoid pump crack due to uneven thermal expansion. Sometime designer drill a hole at check valve to perform similar function..."

So got it ?

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is known as one of industrial waste gas causing global warming...there are number of measures are implemented to reduce global warming. CO2 reduction measures are CO2 capturing, reinjection into aquifer, injection into reservior for well maintenance, gas injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), etc.

Above efforts will reduce CO2 release into atmosphere. However, recycling CO2 will increase quantity of CO2 in oil and result serious corrosion problem. Hence it needs to be removed from the flashed gas (from unstabilised oil). CO2 removal technology using amine absorption has been used for many years. Recently i found a website (OGT) where the founders, Ralph Weiland and Jack Dingman are those experts in this technology.

Optimized Gas Treating, Inc. (OGT) was established in 1992 by Ralph Weiland and Jack Dingman for the single purpose of providing a commercial version of a Windows-based software package for simulating acid gas removal with aqueous alkanolamines that uses a fundamental mass and heat transfer rate approach to column modeling. ProTreat™ is the culmination of more than 30 years of research in gas treating supported by government and industry in both academic and commercial environments. ProTreat is our sole product. Consequently, it receives our undivided attention in maintaining and enhancing its capabilities so that it remains the premier software package for gas treating with amines. OGT’s principals are recognized world experts in most aspects of gas treating — they offer a total of nearly 60 years of relevant experience.

How to calculate pressure drop and capacity of countercurrent gas/liquid packed column ?

J. Stichlmajr et al has published an article may answer above question :

<<
Generalised model to predict pressure drop and capacity of countercurrent gas/liquid packed column >>, Gas Separation 8 Purification 1989 Vol 3 March

A generalized model has been developed for the prediction of pressure drop and flooding in packed columns in which gas and liquid flow countercurrently. The model has been validated for a wide variety of packings, both random and structured. A single mathematical expression is used to describe all flow regimes: dry gas, irrigated gas flow below the load point, loading region, and flooding. The approach to the model development is fundamental in character and is an improvement over models published.

The model can be used with

- Structured packing : Montz, Gempack, Sulzer

- Random packing (ceramic) : Raschig, Pall, Reflux, Hiflow, Berl Saddles, Intalox Saddles, Torus Saddles

- Random packing (metal) : Raschig, Pall, Bialecki, Nutter, Cascade Mini, Super Saddles

- Random packing (plastic) : Pall, NSW, Leva
