A team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has recently created a new material for direct-methanol fuel cells (DMFC) which increases power output by more than 50 percent. The team used layer-by-layer assembly technique and able to creates a thin firm (nanomembrane) less permeable to methanol as compares to Nafion which presently used in the market. Read more in "MIT creates new material for fuel cells".

This significant improvement in nano technology and fuel cell industry. Fuel cell is known as one of the environment friendly energy source has obtained serious attention by many governments and high level education. This break-through probably lead nano and fuel technology to another level.

Researcher reported that certain carbon nanotube structure (long, thin carbon nanotubes) might cause cancer for long exposure within sufficient quantities inhaled. Carbon nanotube (long & thin) has some properties close to asbestos which potentially cause mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining that take 30 years to manifest.

The good news is short carbon nanotube may not pose similar cancer risk than long, thin carbon nanotubes.

This is one the development where all new stuff will have to be gone through as we understood it more and more. Although it pose some level of risk, however sufficient precaution and procedure in place shall be able to minimize and avoid the consequence. General saying : Risk can not be avoided but can be managed. Those who are advancing their interests and works in nanotube study and production is encourage (shall) to take quick actions.

Those of you conducting research and development in nanotechnology, this could be a great news to you...

E.ON, one of the world’s largest investor-owned power and gas company with 88,000 employees generated EUR69 billion in sales in 2007. Other than power and gas activities in Europe and Russia, E.ON also operate electric and gas utility business and renewable-source generating assets in North America.

E.ON has allocated 6 million euros in research and development funding to NanoTech research and development groups around the world. If your research and development group is focusing on the application of nanotechnology to energy areas like carbon capture and storage, energy storage, and power transmission, your group may consider...

Projects to be considered (but not limited to) :
  • Efficiency improvements for renewable energy technologies
  • Further developments in Carbon Capture and Storage
  • Power lines capable of carrying significantly greater loads
  • Hydrogen and natural gas storage
  • Efficient, large-scale electricity storage solutions
  • End-use efficiency improvements
  • Micro fuel cells for portable power applications
  • Advancements in the transport sector e.g. Electric Vehicles
Deadline : 30th May 2008

My notebook battery (lithium type) can last for about 2 hours after fully charged. Now, with Nanowire battery, you may expect 10 times longer without stop. This really a great invention and improvement in battery industry.

Stanford researchers led by Yi Cui, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, have found a way to use silicon nanowires to reinvent the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, known as Li-ion that power laptops, iPods, video cameras, cell phones, and countless other devices.

Read details in Nanowire battery can hold 10 times the charge of existing lithium-ion battery.
