Construction Quality Program supports the overall Project Quality Management during the construction phase of oil and gas projects. Construction Quality Program is an enhancement on the conventional Site Construction Quality Plan by implementing Project Turnover Work Process until Commissioning and Start-Up-Phase.
Among others, the talk will cover the following aspects : -
- Using Site Quality Plan to execute the project construction activities
- Enhancing Site Quality Plan by exploring best practice quality program
- Adopting Interface Quality Management among key project team members such as engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and operation
- Maintaining consistent monitoring and verification activities to ensure that commissioning work commences only after construction activities and mechanical completion integrity checking have been completed

The number of large natural gas fields for mankind’s exploitation is reducing as we go into the future. Future natural gas fields are relatively smaller, scattered in various geographical locations and contains higher acidic components. As the world’s energy demand continues, there is an urgent need to develop emerging technologies to monetize small natural gas resources around the globe which could not be economically carried out now.
The emerging technologies have to be safe, economical and more robust than presently available technologies for successful and meaningful gas production. This presentation will share several emerging technologies currently being studied and developed by the oil and gas industry for such purpose.

ChemicalProcessing.com has conducted annual salary survey from 2005, to 2009. Survey show that average salaries have steadily increased from 2005 to 2009. Average salaries started with $85,234 in 2005, increased to $89,690 in 2006, $90,038 in 2007, $95,231 in 2008 and lately $107,804 in 2009. However, the average pay raise was down slightly, 4.23% compared to the 5.06% reported in 2008. Details of these surveys may refer to :

The objective of this talk is to provide an overview of the phases of a project along with the project management controls necessary for the successful management of HSE as applicable to E&P type projects. Thermal drying operations are found in almost all industrial sectors and are known to consume 10-25% of the national industrial energy in the developed world. With emerging economies rapidly industrializing various economic sectors, the energy consumed for thermal drying and the resulting adverse environmental impact of the greenhouse gas emissions will inevitably rise with time. The most effective solution to this growing problem is to develop and utilize highly energy-efficient drying technologies that will reduce net energy consumption and mitigate the environmental impact.
Over the last three decades much progress has been made in this area. This talk will present an overview of the causes for inefficiency in industrial drying and provide a summary of numerous new attempts to enhance the performance of drying technologies in diverse industries. In particular, advantages of heat pump-assisted drying, superheated steam drying, pulse combustion and pulse combustion-assisted drying, utilization of waste heat and renewable energy for drying etc will be discussed along with selected case studies. In addition, the efficiencies of dryer systems can also be improved by multi staging, combining different types of dryer and by intermittent and multi-mode heat inputs for batch dryers. With over 400 types of dryers used to dry some 50,000 materials at various production scales, it is necessary to examine the problem at the fundamental level of dehydration.

There are over 400 dryer types cited in the technical literature although only about 50 types are commonly found in practice. As such proper selection of dryer is an important topic to industrial drying. Dryer selection has long been practiced as an art rather than science depending more on prior experience and vendors’ recommendations. As drying technologies have evolved and become more diverse and complex, this has become an increasingly difficult and demanding task for the non-expert. Further, the task is exasperated by the need to meet stricter quality specifications, higher production rates, higher energy costs and stringent environmental regulations.
This talk intends to give an introduction to industrial drying and briefly discuss the classification of industrial dryers. The key classification criteria for industrial dryers will be discussed as well as selection criteria. It is important for an engineer responsible for selection of a dryer or a drying system to be aware of what is available in the market, what the key criteria are in the selection process and thus arrive at alternative possibilities before going to vendors of such equipment for comparative quotes. It is time and effort well spent since the cost of incorrect selection can be very high. It was reported that over 80 percent of major chemical companies in Europe – each using over 1000 dryers in their production facilities – made errors in selecting dryers. What is optimal choice in one location at one point in time may be a wrong choice for another geographic location some years later. Prior use is a definite help but not the only criterion to be used in selecting drying systems.

It is anticipated that there will be less commercially viable oil & gas fields in the Malaysian shallow water. As such, there is an increased push towards developing fields in the deep (200-1000m water depth) and ultra-deep (more than 1000m water depth) water. In line with this shift, Petronas has set the tone by stating its ambition to make Malaysia as the regional deepwater hub and, along with its Production Sharing Contractors, has set the ball rolling by the successful project execution of and oil production from Kikeh Deepwater Development. The presentation intends to share presentor's general experience in the deepwater projects, which covers background, introduction to technologies, challenges/opportunities, and Kikeh development examples.

Biotechnology is a multi-disciplinary area, encompassing the biological sciences, industrial technology and bioprocess engineering. It involves using living cells or biological catalysts for the production of industrial products and services. Chemical engineers can make a significant contribution in the bioreactor operation and subsequent downstream processing for the separation and recovery of products. Chemical engineers can also help to develop integrated processes for energy and resource recovery to improve existing biotechnological processes.

The atmosphere acts as an insulating blanket to keep the average temperature of our planet Earth within a pleasant ange. The green house effect on the trace gases of the atmosphere, such Carbon Dioxide, keep the heat near the Earth surface and keep out the cold of the outer space. The climate of Earth however is unstable and since the end of the ice age some 10,000 years ago, the average temperature of the Earth has increased steadily from a few degrees Centigrade to more than 15 degrees Centigrade. Since the Industrial Revolution, the Carbon Dioxide concentrations have increased from about 280ppm to 365ppm and the Earth temperature goes up as the Carbon Dioxide concentrations increase. The effect of global warming is a change in the climate and weather patterns which hastens the extinction of species, influence the lengths of seasons, cause coastal flooding, and lead to more frequent and severe storms. The response to global warming includes the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012 by all countries except United States and Kazakhstan after the United Nations climate talk in December 2007. The solution to global warming is Carbon (Greenhouse Gases) Management and the strategy is three pronged, i.e. Policy, Education and Technology.

It has been a standard industrial practice to carry out hazard analysis for hazardous operations. However, accidents still happen and occasionally, the consequential losses are alarming. In many cases, the accidents could have been prevented if the hazard analysis had been more effectively completed or if the analysis findings (information pertaining the hazards and their controls) are communicated and hence, appreciated by everyone. In response to this, the Bowtie technique was invented and is being increasingly adopted in the oil & gas industry. It is simple and can be applied for all types of hazard such as fire/explosion, environmental pollution, work-related accidents, transportation accidents, security threat, health hazards and may others. It is suitable for other industries as well e.g. construction, fabrication, manufacturing, aviation, shipping etc. The Bow-tie technique emphasises on a pragmatic approach to identify not only hazard controls but also measures required to ensure the effectiveness of the identified controls. The overall findings are graphically presented in a bowtie-like skeleton that allows easy understanding and communication.

The Registration of Engineers Act, 1967 (i.e REA’67 or the Act) has a shelf life of more than 40 years. The Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM) was operationalised on the 23rd Aug, 1972 to implement the REA’67. The Act in its original form regulated the natural persons; the Malaysian engineers. Since the BEM came into being, the REA’67 has been amended four (4) times to suit prevailing circumstances, and we now have; registered engineers and ECP’s, Accredited Checkers, etc. Beside the REA’67, we also have the companion “1990 Regulation (2003)”; BEM Guides, and other BEM requirements-all these adding up to what can be described as “Measures” of the Malaysian PRA (i.e. the Professional Regulatory Authority”) over the practice of engineering in the country. Many Malaysian engineers believe that Malaysia needs an act which is suitable for the 21st Century. The IEM being the principle Advocate of the Malaysian Engineering Community, also think so. Accordingly, to get stake-holders’ inputs, a forum on “A New Engineers Act” is hereby proposed.

As per Control Design, chemical engineers in US top the salary ladder at $63,616, followed by other engineering and technical disciplines i.e average salary of a controls engineer is up more than 8%, second largest jump what controls engineers are paid at the beginning of the new millennium. As comparison, salaries for accounting and business administration undergrads remained stable from last year at $47,429 and $44,195 respectively.
Indians working with MNCs is getting the highest salary hike of about 14 per cent on an average across the world in 2008. According to ECA International General Manager Lee Quane, “Salary increase in India is expected to be the biggest this year as companies have to keep in mind the inflation for their employees to maintain a good economic stature,” Strong growth in India is top in year 2008, this followed by by Argentina (12.7 per cent), Indonesia (11.3 per cent), Russia (11 per cent) and China remain static at 8.0%.

In this presentation, Stephen will cover several aspects regarding the DCS. An introduction to the Distributed Control System, from what it is, what it comprises of and how it has developed throughout the decades will be shown. This will provide an outlook on the historical emergence of such a system and the ever-growing need for the DCS in the process industry. Comparisons between a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and a DCS will be made to show the applications and industries these systems are catered to. For the hybrid industries, we will discuss on how the Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) affects the DCS market. Other topics of this presentation will include networking and wireless technologies, process field-bus technologies, advanced process control techniques and how these have been integrated into the DCS.

The Board of Engineers Malaysia Continuing Professional Development Program is into its fourth year running. However, in a recent small preliminary audit on the Continuing Professional Development program for the period from 2005 to through 2007, it was found that a significant number of professional engineers (> 90%) has not come to grips with the concept of
continuing professional development mandatory of licensed professional engineers. There is glaring ill-understanding on the part of the professional engineers while documenting their CPD experiences and suffice to say that it is to the extend appalling, the responses of highly educated engineering professionals to what is a simple documentation. So it is with the desire to see to it that professional members of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia do it right and keeping it simple, that this dialogue is to gauge what’s on your mind, allowing you to voice your opinions/grievances, forward suggestions that should help the CPD programs @ IEM commensurate with the requirements of the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Again, on the premise that CPD is here to stay, this dialogue is for you to say your piece, exchange opinions and gather information on how best to go about it. So don’t stay away! It pays to be a member of IEM!

"Filtration technology is one of the core technologies applied widely to water treatment. It is excellent from economics point of view as equipment and operation costs are relatively low. The operation and maintenance of filtration systems is less complex compared to the maintenance of membrane separation, adsorption, ion exchange and AOP systems. This presentation will highlight a fibre-filter system that has been developed in Korea. Two types of fiber filters, namely, pressure type and gravity type fibre-filters. These filters were tested in pilot plants treating both water and wastewater. Performances of these newly developed fiber filters will be presented and compared against other filter systems."
A talk on Fiber filters will be conducted by Dr. Yun Chang-Han from Sung Shin Engineering Co., Ltd, KOREA, on 10th June 2008 (from 5.30pm - 7.00pm) at IEM new building (formerly known as ICHS building). For PE in MALAYSIA, you will gain 2 CPD hours.

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) or Continuous Power Supply (CPS) is a power supply system continuously maintains power supply to connected equipment from a separate source when main power supply is not available. There are off-line, line-interactive and double conversion type of UPS system.
In Process & Chemical or Oil & Gas plant, critical equipment such as control panel, computer, etc will be kept online to facilitate safe shutdown and quick restart-up. A half-day seminar on UPS will be conducted by Bernard Lee, a product manager with Eaton Power Quality on 23rd May 2009 at Wawasan Professional Training Center, dataran menteri Bandar Sunway.
